How To Jumpstart A Car

The process of jumping your car can be straightforward if done correctly. We’ve put together a step-by-step guide for you below:

Materials Needed:

  1. Jumper Cables
  2. Another vehicle that runs and has a fully charged battery

Steps:

  1. Align Vehicles: Park the working vehicle close to the one with the dead battery, facing each other but not touching.
  2. Turn Off Both Engines: Before starting, both engines must be off and secure with the parking brake engaged.
  3. Identify Terminals: Open the hoods on both vehicles and then identify the positive (+) and negative (-) terminals on each battery. Most are usually marked with red (positive) and black (negative) covers or markings.
  4. Connect The Cables:
  • Attach one end of the red (positive) jumper cable to the dead battery’s positive terminal.
  • Attach the other end of the same red cable to the positive terminal of the working battery.
  • Attach one end of the black (negative) jumper cable to the working battery’s negative terminal.
  • Attach the other end of the same black (negative) jumper cable to the dead vehicle’s battery.

5. Start the Working Vehicle: Start the working vehicle’s engine and let it run for a few minutes to charge the dead battery fully.

6. Attempt to Start the Dead Vehicle: After a few minutes, try starting the engine of the dead vehicle. If it starts, go ahead and let both engines run for a few more minutes.

7. Disconnect Jumper Cables:

  • In reverse order, disconnect the jumper cables: Remove the black cable from the previously dead vehicle’s metal surface.
  • Remove the black cable from the working battery’s negative terminal.
  • Remove the red cable from the working battery’s positive terminal.
  • Lastly, remove the red cable from the previously dead battery’s positive terminal.

8. Keep the Engine Running: Let the previously dead vehicle’s engine run for a while to ensure the battery is sufficiently charged.

9. Take a Short Drive: It’s a good idea to drive the vehicle for 15-20 minutes to charge the battery further.

Always remember incorrect connections can lead to electrical damage. Hence it’s imperative that you always follow the correct order when connecting and disconnecting the jumper cables. If the battery boost doesn’t work to start the dead battery after several attempts, it may indicate that you may have more than a dead battery and may need a tow to your mechanic.
